Musical Director - Christopher Finch
CHRISTOPHER FINCH is an acclaimed young choral conductor and accompanist. He is greatly in demand throughout the UK as a conductor, accompanist, vocal coach, répétiteur and teacher.
Christopher’s choral conducting career began with the university chamber choirs of York and Birmingham. Alongside an active freelance career, he currently holds the position of Choral Director and Accompanist at Wells Cathedral School, one of only four specialist music schools in England to be funded by the government’s ‘Music and Dance Scheme’. His role at Wells involves him directing the Chapel Choir, guest conducting the Chamber Choir and accompanying and coaching many of the talented young performers.
Alongside his commitments conducting the Wellensian Consort and Wells Cathedral School Chapel Choir, he is also musical director of the ‘Bristol Bach Choir’ and one of Bath’s leading chamber choirs ‘ A Handful of Singers’. Highlights of Christopher’s conducting career encompasses many of the great orchestral/choral works, including Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Mozart Mass in C minor, Britten’s St. Nicolas, Duruflé’s Requiem, Swaynes’ Missa Tiburtina, Rutter’s Requiem and Chilcott’s Requiem. He has also worked as a répétiteur for the late Richard Hickox, accompanied the award winning Bath Camerata, was director of a festival of contemporary South American music in York and has given recitals with some of the country’s leading young professional vocalists. Christopher was John Rutter’s Chorus Master for a performance of his Requiem in Wells Cathedral.
Christopher has performed throughout Europe, the USA and the Far East. A highlight of his foreign engagements was a tour of China and Hong Kong alongside Nigel Perrin. Performances included conducting and accompanying at The Peking University, Beijing Conservatoire and Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. He also found time to adjudicate a piano competition in Beijing, at the request of the British Embassy. He has collaborated with many professional orchestras, both chamber orchestras and period instrument orchestras. In October 2011, he conducted the chamber choir 'Caeli Chorum' at Wigmore Hall in a performance of John Tavener's music, alongside Patricia Rozario, Robert Cohen and Julius Drake and in the presence of the composer. In July 2012 he worked as chorus master for Charles Hazlewood in a production of Carmen. Christopher has performed at many of the UK’S leading classical music festivals including Cheltenham Music Festival and Bath International Music Festival.
His performances have been broadcast widely on BBC television and radio, including a recording of Easter Choral music with Wells Cathedral School Chapel Choir broadcast on Easter Day and a Christmas appearance on BBC’s ‘The One Show’ with the Wellensian Consort and fake snow! Christopher has also broadcast as an accompanist in this country and abroad. Recently, he recorded a recital with the prodigious clarinettist, Joseph Shiner, for broadcast by RTHK (Radio Television Hong Kong). As chorus master, Christopher worked with acclaimed West End musical director, Chris Walker, in the recording of the Soundtrack for ‘Bush Tales’ at Angel Studios.
Christopher is passionate about the importance of singing in education and is actively engaged in outreach as a choral advisor and guest conductor.
